Aziz
Based in Kuala Lumpur, Abd Aziz grew up around music. He first taught himself how to play guitar and then learnt how to play bass as per request of Zahid. As he grew up during the grunge era, his music style was influenced by Nirvana, Pearl Jam, as well as Creed and Butterfingers. In terms of inspiration, Aziz finds creativity in playing through listening to Indonesian bands such as Slank, Dewa and Padi. When playing with Disagree, Aziz strives to find more melodic sounds that could catch the ear of his listeners. He wants his listeners to feel the bass and to get that rhythm he extrudes.
Hamka
Hamka grew up around Malaysia, living in places such as Sarawak and Johor. Finally settling down in Kuala Lumpur, he met a boy name Zahid. With talks to start a band, Hamka became the drummer. Even though he never played before, he always had that beat and he picked it up fast. First listening to bands such as Iron Maiden, Nirvana and Pear Jam, Hamka now has broaden his taste to listening to bands such as Lamb of God, Dave Matthews, and Coldplay. Playing for Disagree, Hamka has learnt that it is best to keep it simple, with the occasional rolls and mini solos. As the backbone of the group, he tries to bring life to every track he plays on.
David
David Buri spent his childhood in the small town of Miri, Sarawak, and his teenage years in The Netherlands. He set his mind to music at the tender age of 16 after being influenced to start by his friends. Ever since then, David picked up a guitar and never put it down. Infused with determination to play, David was influenced first by bands such as Metallica, Iron Maiden, and later reached out for bands such as Incubus, Dave Matthews, and Pat Methaney. He grew as a musician by dabbling in all genres of music. He gathers inspiration to play for Disagree through his experiences as well as through his knowledge of the world.
Zahid
Coming from Kuala Lumpur itself, Zahid always had a dream to succeed in anything he set his mind to. This was no different to his thoughts on being in a successful and respected band in Malaysia. Taking inspiration through bands such as Pearl Jam and Guns and Roses, Zahid wrote and conducted songs that were very melodic and meaningful. He wrote through experiences, thoughts, as well as his journey throughout his life. As the leader of the band, he makes sure that each song could relate to every listener. Now, taking musical inspiration through bands such as Coldplay, Kings of Leon, and Travis, he has found a unique sound that can be thought of as alternative yet mellow. As Disagree continues through their journey in music, Zahid will be there guiding them, finding new roads to take and experimenting on new sounds that could potentially be understood by all.
Though most high school dreams never transpose into nothing more than a glimmer in the dark, two boys made sure that their thoughts would not be forever lost in that ever so popular idea of ‘what if..’. As so, 1995 saw the birth of what would later become the band Disagree. Originating with lead singer and guitarist, Zahid, the drummer, Hamka, and later joined by bassist, Aziz, and former second guitarist, Ashroff, Disagree released their first album At the End of the Day in 2004.
With hits such as ‘Crumbs’, ‘Scarecrow Adam’, and ‘Suicide Note’, Disagree was able to sell 12,000 copies of their debut album; an accomplishment which substantiated their high recognition in the Malaysian English music scene. As well as that, their achievements range from being given the “Most Airplay” Award during the Hitz.fm’s 8th Birthday Bash in 2005, being the fastest album at all three Tower Records outlets and peaking at No. 1 on the Tower Charts, to having three nominations in the 2005 Anugerah Industri Muzik 12, (Best Music Video, Best New English Artiste, Best New Album) and winning the Best New English Artiste Award in the latter.
After several years of promotion and touring, Disagree had a craving to create music which would have a new and different direction. With the departure of Ashroff and the addition of David, Disagree’s new line up finally settled into recording their second album in 2006. After three years of recording, revising, and perfecting, Disagree’s sophomore album, To Prevent the Earth from Moving with You, is now finalized and is set to be released in the end of June 2009.
Under the Fat Boys Label and their producer, Jason Lo, Disagree has been able to find a sound that is said to be more mature and intensely melodic. With their direction embodying the energy of Alternative Rock, Disagree has made a sound that is straightforward and yet seemingly radio friendly. Their first single off the album, ‘Osaka’, and their other songs such as ‘Haley’ and ‘The Tiniest Moment’ will in capture the new direction of Disagree and their sound for this new age.
With their main distributor, Sony Music Entertainment Malaysia Sdn Bhd, and their sponsors, Extreme/Zero Hour clothing and Macbeth shoes, supporting Disagree, the highly anticipated second album will not be shy in fulfilling the public’s expectations.
